La Mouette Rieuse, Bookstore and coffeehouse in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, France
La Mouette Rieuse is a bookstore and coffeehouse in the Marais neighborhood of the 4th arrondissement of Paris, set inside a renovated building with large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The space spans three floors with shelves organized by theme, a ground floor carrying a general book selection, a courtyard terrace, and a top floor used for events.
The space was previously home to Mona Lisait, a well-known bookstore concept, before a full renovation transformed it into La Mouette Rieuse. The facade and interior were rebuilt using wood and metal, while keeping the structure of the original building in place.
The name comes from the seagulls heard near a neighboring park, but it also nods to the laughing seagull character from the comic strip Gaston Lagaffe. The shelves mix books about Paris, art volumes, and objects tied to the local area, alongside retro posters that recall the shop's previous life.
The place is open nearly every day, including weekends, but seating inside is limited, so arriving in the morning or late afternoon gives a better chance of finding a spot. Anyone interested in an event on the top floor, such as a reading or a workshop, should check the schedule online in advance.
La Mouette Rieuse belongs to a group of bookstores each named after a bird, such as Le Merle Moqueur or Le Gai Rossignol, giving it a recognizable identity within a small network. The book selection is organized by verbs rather than genres, for example "savourer" for cooking books or "tracer" for art volumes, which makes browsing feel different from a standard bookstore.
