Skhvilo Castle, Medieval fortress in Shida Kartli region, Georgia
The elongated rectangular fortress extends along a ridge between the Rekhula river ravine and Tiriponi valley, featuring walls reaching 14 meters in height.
Built in the 14th century, this fortress served as the primary residence of the Amilakhori duke family before they relocated to Kvemo Chala in the 16th century.
The architectural elements of Skhvilo Castle represent the medieval military engineering techniques of Georgia, including defensive bastions and a sophisticated water supply system.
Visitors can explore the fortress grounds, which include a five-story watchtower, a two-story church, and multiple defensive structures spread across 45 by 20 meters.
The castle features an advanced defense system with six bastions: two semicircular ones on the west side and four pillar-shaped structures emerging from the eastern wall.
