Skhvilo Castle, Medieval fortress in Shida Kartli region, Georgia

Skhvilo Castle is an elongated rectangular fortress in the Shida Kartli region that stretches along a ridge between a river ravine and a valley. The site contains a five-story watchtower, a two-story church, and multiple defensive structures distributed across its grounds.

The fortress was built in the 14th century as the main residence of the Amilakhori duke family. In the 16th century, they moved their seat elsewhere, leaving the castle behind as a reminder of their earlier power.

The fortress reflects medieval defensive strategies used across Georgia, with carefully positioned bastions and a water system that served the residents' daily needs.

Getting to the fortress involves walking a steep natural path with both challenging and easier sections, so sturdy footwear is essential. The best time to explore is early morning when the weather is stable and views across the landscape are clear.

The fortress features a sophisticated bastion system with two semicircular structures on the west side and four pillar-shaped bastions projecting from the eastern wall. This varied arrangement shows thoughtful defense planning that considered threats from different directions.
