Ikalto monastery

Ikalto monastery is a complex of several churches and ruins situated on a hillside in eastern Georgia's Kakheti region. The site includes preserved religious buildings, remains of a former academy, and historic wine cellars.

The monastery was founded in the 6th century and later became a significant academy when King David IV established a major teaching institution. This dual role as a church and school shaped the site for many generations.

The monastery served as a major learning center for generations, and visitors can observe the remains that show how diverse knowledge was taught here. The blend of spiritual education with hands-on crafts shaped daily life at this place.

The site lies west of Telavi and is best explored on foot, with the various structures scattered across the sloping terrain. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and there are no paved pathways.

The monastery holds two ancient wine cellars with a stone wine press that demonstrates how medieval Georgians produced their renowned wines. This combination of prayer and wine cultivation was typical for these communities.
