Ikalto monastery

The Ikalto monastery complex contains three churches, academy ruins, and wine cellars situated on a hillside in eastern Georgia's Kakheti region.

Founded by Saint Zenon in the sixth century, the monastery expanded into an educational center under King David IV with the establishment of Ikalto Academy in 1106.

The Ikalto Academy instructed students in theology, astronomy, philosophy, geography, and practical skills including pottery, metalwork, viticulture, and winemaking until 1616.

The monastery lies 10 kilometers west of Telavi, with the main Khvtaeba church, academy ruins, and wine production facilities open for exploration.

Two wine cellars remain at the monastery, featuring a preserved stone wine press that demonstrates the historical wine production methods of medieval Georgia.
