Akhali Shuamta monastery, Medieval Orthodox monastery in Telavi Municipality, Georgia

Akhali Shuamta monastery stands on a plain ringed by three mountains and includes a main temple, bell tower, and stone walls defining its grounds. The layout follows a compact design typical of Georgian religious structures, with defensive features integrated into the overall composition.

The monastery was founded in the 1550s on the initiative of Queen Tinatin, wife of King Levan of Kakheti, following the abandonment of Old Shuamta. This new foundation emerged from efforts to revive religious practice in the region during that period.

The monastery houses the Saint Mary Icon of Khakhuli, decorated with precious stones and gold, showing how religious art is venerated here. Visitors can observe this ornate work and understand its place in the spiritual life of those who gather at this site.

Visitors should wait at the entrance gate for a monastery sister to provide access and information about the church interior. Photography rules should be respected to protect the sacred space.

The burial grounds hold the remains of celebrated Georgian poet Alexander Chavchavadze and his family members, giving the site literary significance. These graves connect the place to important figures in Georgia's cultural past.
