Shio-Mgvime monastery, Medieval monastery in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Georgia.
Shio-Mgvime is a monastery complex located within a narrow limestone canyon along the Mtkvari River, containing multiple churches and religious structures spanning different periods. The site integrates buildings from the 6th century through the early modern era, arranged along the natural topography of the canyon.
The site was founded in the 6th century by Saint Shio, one of the Thirteen Syrian Fathers, and quickly became a major religious center. Over centuries, successive generations added new buildings that reflect their religious life and artistic traditions.
The monastery reflects the veneration of Saint Shio and his spiritual teachings that remain alive in local piety today. The stone iconostases and frescoes reveal how medieval worshippers expressed their faith and which sacred images held meaning for them.
The site lies roughly two hours south of Tbilisi and is best reached by private transport or organized excursions. Visitors should wear appropriate dress and expect uneven paths within the canyon.
The complex preserves Saint Shio's original cave dwelling where he lived and prayed before later structures grew around it. This direct link between the founder and the physical space made the site a center for personal spiritual devotion for later pilgrims.
