Armazi Castle

Armazi Castle is a stone fortress positioned on elevated terrain above the Armaziskhevi River valley. The structure features multiple towers with rounded corners and varying floor levels that reflect different periods of use and modification.

The fortress was built between the 13th and 15th centuries as a defensive structure guarding the road to other Caucasian regions. It served as part of Georgia's broader system of mountain passes and trade route protection.

The fortress displays medieval Georgian building methods that visitors can observe in the stonework and tower design. These construction techniques reveal how local builders solved practical problems of defense and durability.

The trail begins at the river confluence and leads upward through the valley toward the hilltop fortress. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and allow several hours for the walk and exploration of the ruins.

One of the towers features an unusual triangular shape that is rare among medieval Georgian fortifications. This geometric design demonstrates an innovative approach to improving defensive capabilities.
