Helheim Glacier, Outlet glacier in Sermersooq, Greenland

Helheim Glacier is an outlet glacier in eastern Greenland that stretches across a wide area and connects directly to the central ice sheet. The ice flows into Helheim Fjord, creating massive walls of compressed ice and deep crevasses along its path.

The glacier was named after Nordic traditions and became a focus of scientific observation from the early 20th century onward. The movement and changes of the ice have been intensively documented since the turn of the millennium.

The name comes from Norse mythology, where Helheim represented the realm of the dead and reflects the cultural connection to ancient settlers. This choice of name shows how nature and ancient beliefs still shape the way people understand and speak about this landscape.

The remote location requires specialized equipment and preparation for any visit. Weather and ice conditions are highly changeable, so traveling with experienced guides or research teams is essential.

The ice produces distinctive seismic signals when large blocks break away from the glacier's edge. These glacial earthquakes are measurable and help researchers understand how the ice is changing.
