Sermilik Station, Arctic research station in Sermersooq, Greenland
Sermilik Station is a research facility on Ammassalik Island with multiple buildings, including a two-story structure that houses around 25 researchers. The installation includes support facilities for conducting scientific work in this remote location.
The facility was established in 1970 by the University of Copenhagen for Arctic research. A major avalanche in 1972 destroyed the main building, leading to reconstruction and strengthening of the station's infrastructure.
The station works closely with local Inuit communities, blending scientific methods with traditional knowledge about the Arctic environment. This partnership shapes how research is conducted and understood in the region.
Access requires flying to Kulusuk Airport followed by helicopter or boat transfers to Tasiilaq, then hiking to reach the station. Visitors should be prepared for extreme weather conditions and the physical demands of the journey.
Researchers study the Mittivakkat Glacier and monitor the Piteraq phenomenon, a distinctive wind event tied to this region. These natural features offer insights into the extreme forces shaping the Arctic landscape.
