Garafiri Dam, Embankment dam on Konkouré River, Guinea.
Garafiri Dam is an embankment dam spanning 725 meters across the Konkouré River with a height of 80 meters. The reservoir holds approximately 1,600 million cubic meters of water and covers roughly 62 square kilometers between the Kindia and Mamou regions.
Construction began in 1995 under Salini Impregilo and was completed in 1999, marking Guinea's first major hydroelectric project. This infrastructure project was a turning point for the country's energy development.
The dam connects local communities through electricity supply and has become a landmark in how people experience the landscape. It represents a turning point in the region's access to modern power infrastructure.
The best time to visit is during the rainy season when the reservoir is full and the dam shows its complete appearance. Access is from the road between Kindia and Mamou, which is primarily used by passing travelers.
Three Francis turbines operate at this installation producing 75 megawatts of electricity for surrounding regions. This equipment makes it one of the most significant power sources for local supply.
