Monastery of Makariotissa, Orthodox monastery on Mount Helikon, Greece
The Monastery of Makariotissa sits on Mount Helikon in the Thiva region and consists of several stone buildings arranged around a central chapel. The complex includes living quarters, work spaces, and farm buildings where about 20 monks carry out their daily lives.
The monastery was founded in the 12th century and later served as refuge for Greek rebels during Ottoman occupation. The community suffered a major blow when Turkish forces burned the complex in 1826.
The monks here conduct daily prayers and maintain Orthodox traditions through regular ceremonies in the monastery chapel. Visitors can feel the quiet focus during these religious practices and observe how monastic life shapes the rhythm of the place.
Access is via mountain paths and the elevation requires good fitness for hiking. The monks sell locally produced items such as yogurt, cheese, and honey directly to visitors on site.
The monastery received the Gold Award for Authentic Taste of Greece in 2020 and 2021 for its dairy products from animals fed with controlled feed. These awards show how the community's old production methods meet modern quality standards.
