Kitsiputous, waterfall in Finland
Kitsiputous is a cascade of waterfalls in the Mallan nature reserve near Enontekiö, dropping down a steep mountain slope in a series of steps. Water from the Kitsijoki river plunges from the slopes of Iso-Malla mountain, creating a total height of around 118 meters with the main drop measuring roughly 29 meters.
The waterfall system was carved over thousands of years by the river eroding through glaciated mountain slopes, revealing the geological history of the region. The cascading form reflects how water and ice have shaped this landscape since ancient times.
The trail to the waterfalls is a marked mountain path of about 5 kilometers from the Mallan parking area, taking roughly two hours to walk. The terrain is rocky and steep with uneven ground, so sturdy boots and reasonable fitness help you move safely and comfortably.
Local Sami speakers call the falls Gihcigorži and also Mallan kyyneleet, meaning Mallan's tears, reflecting the emotional bond people have with this place in traditional culture. These Sami names show the site has held meaning in the community for generations.
