Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array, Astronomical observatory at Kilpisjärvi, Finland
The Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array contains two radio telescope systems that observe HF and VHF frequencies near the Norwegian border at 495 meters elevation.
The observatory, established in 2011, operates under the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory management on behalf of Oulu University with funding from multiple Finnish institutions.
Scientists at the facility contribute to international research by studying the aurora borealis, solar wind interactions, and various atmospheric phenomena in the Arctic region.
The facility functions independently or connects with the EISCAT VHF radar in Tromsø, allowing researchers to gather data about electron density profiles in the atmosphere.
The observatory uses LOFAR phased-array antennas without moving parts, enabling rapid sky scanning and continuous monitoring of the ionosphere through cosmic radio noise.
