Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array

Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array, Astronomical observatory at Kilpisjärvi, Finland

Description

Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array is a research facility in northern Finland equipped with two radio telescope systems that detect high-frequency and very-high-frequency signals near the Norwegian border at about 500 meters elevation. The facility operates independently or connects with the EISCAT radar in Tromsø to measure electron density profiles throughout the atmosphere.

History

The facility was established in 2011 and is managed by the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory on behalf of Oulu University. It receives funding from several Finnish institutions to support its research operations.

Culture

Scientists at the facility contribute to international research by studying the aurora borealis, solar wind interactions, and various atmospheric phenomena in the Arctic region.

Practical

The facility is located in a remote region with harsh weather conditions, so visitors should be prepared with warm clothing and winter gear. The location is difficult to access and requires advance planning for transportation and accommodation.

Did you know?

The facility uses LOFAR phased-array antennas with no moving parts, allowing fast sky scans and round-the-clock ionosphere monitoring. This design enables continuous observation of cosmic radio signals without mechanical wear.
