Pitsusköngäs

Pitsusköngäs, Waterfall in Käsivarsi Wilderness Area, Enontekiö, Finland.

Pitsusköngäs is a waterfall in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area that drops about 17 meters over hard shale rock, creating a powerful torrent. The water plunges into a deep gorge bordered by steep rock walls that frame the force of the cascade.

The waterfall has continuously shaped the shale landscape of the Käsivarsi region through water erosion over extended periods. This natural force carved out the deep gorge that defines the area today.

The Sámi people call this place Bihcosgorži, connecting it to their traditional understanding of the northern landscape. This local name reflects how indigenous communities have long recognized and incorporated natural features into their cultural knowledge.

Reaching this waterfall requires a demanding multi-day hike along the Nordkalottleden Trail starting from Kilpisjärvi, with most sections well marked. Good physical fitness and proper gear are essential, as the route passes through remote wilderness terrain.

On sunny days, light reflecting off the water spray creates vivid rainbow formations at the base of the waterfall that are visible from specific vantage points. These optical effects depend on the angle of sunlight and the observer's location.
