Elämänmäki, Nature conservation site in Mänttä-Vilppula, Finland
Elämänmäki is a protected forest area rising about 189 meters above sea level, dominated by dense spruce woodlands with trees reaching roughly 40 meters in height. Walking through reveals four surrounding lakes visible from elevated vantage points on the hill.
A doctor named E.W. Lybeck founded a sanatorium here in 1904, offering natural healing methods to patients seeking recovery. The facility operated until 1917, after which the hill returned to being valued as a natural space.
The hill attracted notable Finnish artists and writers who came for healing treatments, making it a gathering place for creative minds during that era. This connection to the arts community shaped how people viewed and used the location during its most active period.
Access to the hill is via nature trails leading to the summit with several observation points along the way. Wear suitable footwear and plan enough time to explore the wooded slopes without rushing.
The forest here contains trees averaging around 150 years old, providing nesting grounds for approximately 25 bird species. This mature woodland ecosystem makes it a special refuge for wild birds rarely found in younger forests.
