Kupa, Border river between Croatia and Slovenia
The river flows for roughly 297 kilometers through varying terrain while forming a natural boundary between Croatia and Slovenia. Beginning in Risnjak National Park, it courses eastward through forested areas, open meadows, and narrower canyon-like sections.
The name comes from the Latin word Colapis, reflecting the meandering nature of the waterway. It has served as a boundary marker since ancient times and shaped settlement patterns along its course.
Local inhabitants have practiced fishing traditions passed down through generations, and this deep connection to the waterway shapes daily life and local celebrations along both banks.
Camping facilities and outdoor recreational areas are scattered along the riverbanks for easy access. Swimming and water activities work best from June through September when water temperatures become comfortable.
The waterway is home to 39 different fish species and forms part of a protected nature reserve. This biodiversity makes it one of the most ecologically valuable regions in the Balkans.
