Mala Kapela Tunnel, longest tunnel in Croatia
The Mala Kapela Tunnel is a road tunnel running beneath Mala Kapela mountain and stretching about 5.800 meters through the mountain range. It features two separate directional tubes with smooth concrete surfaces, bright lighting throughout, and modern ventilation systems designed to ensure safe passage through this section of the Dinaric Alps.
The tunnel opened in 2005 and initially allowed passage in both directions through a single tube. A second tube was completed in 2009, creating separate directional lanes that significantly improved traffic flow and safety on this important highway route.
Driving through the tunnel is straightforward with clear signage and modern lighting guiding drivers on the route. The interior temperature remains cool and stable regardless of outside conditions, making the passage a smooth experience without unexpected obstacles.
During construction, workers discovered natural caves and caverns within the mountain that were carefully navigated to preserve these geological formations. This makes the tunnel remarkable as it demonstrates how modern engineering coexists with the mountain's natural features.
