Bokar Fortress, Fortified tower in Dubrovnik, Croatia
The limestone fortress stands on a rocky cliff at the western corner of Dubrovnik's city walls, featuring a distinctive semicircular structure over two levels.
Designed by Florentine architect Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, the fortress was constructed between 1461 and 1463 to protect the Pile Gate entrance and surrounding moat.
The fortress represents a significant example of Renaissance military architecture, combining defensive functionality with the Mediterranean building traditions of the period.
Visitors can access the fortress through the Town Walls circuit, where they can examine historical cannons and view a collection of precious stones.
The structure extends partially over a detached rock formation, requiring special arched supports to bridge the gap while allowing sea water to flow beneath.
