Clock tower, Clock tower in Old Town, Croatia
The Clock Tower is a bell tower in Dubrovnik's Old Town rising approximately 31 meters (102 feet) above the surrounding streets. The structure houses a large clock face and features two moveable bronze figures that serve as striking mechanisms for the bell within.
The tower was built in 1444 and has shaped Dubrovnik's skyline for centuries. Following earthquake damage that caused it to shift, significant reconstruction work in the 1920s restored its stability and position.
The tower serves as a focal point where locals and visitors gather to mark the passage of time together. Its bell has rung to signal important moments in the city's daily rhythm for generations.
The tower stands at the eastern end of Stradun and is easily accessible on foot from anywhere in the Old Town. The best time to photograph it is in early morning or near sunset when the light is most favorable.
The two bronze figures adorning the top were cast earlier than the famous Moors at Venice's St. Mark's Square, yet remain far less celebrated. These green-patinated figures have marked time for Dubrovnik residents every single day for over 500 years.
