St Blaise's Church, Baroque church on Placa street, Dubrovnik, Croatia
St Blaise's Church is a Baroque structure on Placa street featuring a single square interior space with Corinthian columns supporting a central oblong cupola. The barrel-vaulted ceiling displays rich decorative work typical of the Baroque period, creating a cohesive interior composition.
A fire in 1706 destroyed the medieval building, after which Venetian architect Marino Groppelli designed its replacement. The new structure was built between 1707 and 1715 and has stood at this prominent location ever since.
The church is dedicated to Saint Blaise, Dubrovnik's protector saint, whose 15th-century Gothic statue at the main altar holds a model of the original building. This connection shows why locals have always cherished this sanctuary as a spiritual anchor for the city.
The church stands near the center of the Old Town and is reached by climbing a flight of stairs framed by stone angel statues. Its position on Placa makes it easy to include in a walking tour of the old town.
The facade is framed by four Corinthian columns and topped with a semicircular gable featuring a balustrade. Three statues crown this upper section, all created by architect Groppelli himself, adding a distinctive finish to the roofline.
