Gundulićs, Market square in Old Town, Croatia

Gundulićeva poljana is a square in Dubrovnik's Old Town, laid out after the 1667 earthquake. At its centre stands a statue of poet Ivan Gundulić, unveiled in 1893, with reliefs showing a woman on a throne, a dragon biting the throne and the winged Lion of Saint Mark. In one corner is the Lion Fountain, and a broad stairway at the right end climbs to the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

After the devastating earthquake of 1667 destroyed much of the city, this area was rebuilt and eventually transformed into an open market square. The statue honoring the poet was added in 1893, commemorating an important figure in the city's literary past.

In one corner of the square stands the Lion Fountain, a small stone fountain with a carved lion's head that many visitors walk past on their way to the statue. The square opens onto a broad flight of steps leading up to the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
