Tvornica papira Rijeka, Paper mill in Centar-Sušak, Croatia
The Paper Mill of Rijeka was an expansive industrial complex with four main production sections for different paper types and specialty products. The facility also had its own power generation plant that supplied electricity to the surrounding town before World War II.
The mill was founded in 1821 by merchant Andrija Ljudevit Adamić and introduced one of the Balkans' first steam engines in 1833. This made it a pioneer of industrial development in the region.
The mill employed generations of workers from nearby communities and shaped the identity of these areas through shared industrial work. Families built their lives around this employer and the connections it created.
The site is no longer active and can be viewed from outside, with the factory building design reflecting its production process. Visitors should know that as a former industrial site, access may be limited in places.
By the 1980s the mill controlled roughly seven percent of the global cigarette paper market and ranked second in European production of this specialty grade. This success was remarkable given its location far from Europe's major paper centers.
