Gubec lime, Protected lime tree in Gornja Stubica, Croatia
Gubec lime is a large-leaved tree that stands near the Church of St. George in Gornja Stubica. Growing to about 9 meters tall with a massive trunk, it is one of the region's most distinctive natural monuments.
The tree is approximately 400 years old and witnessed the Peasants' Revolt of 1573, when Matija Gubec led the uprising against feudal oppression in the region. It stands as a living memory of this pivotal moment in Croatian history.
Since 1957, this natural monument has represented the resistance of Croatian peasants who fought against noble oppression. The tree serves as a living reminder of the region's struggle for freedom and rights.
The tree is located next to a church and can be easily found while exploring the area. Visitors can combine their visit with a stop at the nearby Museum of Peasant Revolts, housed in a baroque castle.
The Living Archive project has preserved genetic material from the tree since 2011 to ensure its descendants survive for future generations. This modern approach safeguards the biological continuity of a historical monument.
