Sljeme, Mountain summit in Bistra, Croatia.
Sljeme is the highest point of the Medvednica mountain range in Croatia, sitting at 1,035 meters (3,395 feet) above sea level. The summit is surrounded by dense forest and reached by a network of hiking trails that climb from several directions.
In the early 1900s, the first paths and facilities were built on the mountain, making the summit accessible to visitors from Zagreb for the first time. Over the following decades, a cable car and ski infrastructure were added, turning it into a year-round destination.
Every winter, the Snow Queen Trophy slalom race brings top female skiers from around the world to the slopes here. The race is part of the World Cup calendar and draws large crowds up the mountain each year.
You can reach the summit on foot via marked hiking trails or by taking the cable car that departs from Zagreb. In winter, trails can be snow-covered and slippery, so proper footwear makes a real difference.
A television tower at the summit has broadcast signals across the region for decades and acts as a reference point visible from far below. On clear days, the view from the top reaches well into neighboring Slovenia.
