Sljeme, Mountain summit in Bistra, Croatia.
Sljeme is the highest peak of the Medvednica mountain range, reaching 1,035 meters (3,395 feet) above sea level. The mountain is covered with thick forests and criss-crossed by trails that lead to viewpoints and natural areas.
The mountain was developed as a recreational destination in the early 1900s when local authorities built the first paths and facilities for public use. These early infrastructure improvements opened the summit to visitors from the city and surrounding areas.
The mountain hosts the Snow Queen Trophy, a women's slalom ski competition that draws female athletes from around the world each winter. This event has made the region known as a winter sports destination in Southeast Europe.
You can reach the summit by hiking trail from the valley or taking the cable car directly from Zagreb. In winter months, trails may be snow-covered and walking conditions can be uneven.
A television tower stands at the summit, broadcasting signals across the region while serving as a striking landmark visible from far away. On clear days, the view extends beyond Croatia to neighboring Slovenia.
