Veternica, Cave system in Podsused - Vrapče, Croatia
Description
Veternica is a cave system that stretches through the southern slopes of Medvednica mountain, measuring around 7000 meters in total length. Inside, visitors find chambers decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, and other mineral deposits.
History
The cave holds archaeological remains from prehistoric times, including fossils of extinct animals and evidence of ancient human settlements. These findings demonstrate that people have used this site for thousands of years.
Culture
The name Veternica comes from Proto-Slavic roots and refers to the natural wind that moves between the entrance and the interior passages. Visitors can feel this air circulation as they walk through the tunnels.
Practical
Only the first 380 meters of the cave system are open to visitors and are explored through guided tours. Warm clothing is recommended because temperatures inside remain cool year-round.
