Modro oko, Protected lake in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Croatia
Modro Oko is a protected lake set within a flooded karst formation along the lower Neretva River in southern Croatia. The site forms part of a swampy valley with typical features of the karst landscape found in this coastal region.
The lake system developed through natural geological processes in the lower Neretva region where Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina meet. The formation took shape over millennia through the interaction of water and limestone geology.
The nearby village of Desne maintains traditional ties to Saint George, known locally as Sv. Jure, which reflects the spiritual customs of the region.
The best time to visit is during the dry season when water levels are lower and access around the site is easier. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection, as the area is open with limited shade.
The deep, bright blue water exists due to a natural underground spring pushing through the limestone below. This water source created a depression that is remarkably deep compared to the surrounding flat terrain.
