Zsolnay, Hungarian porcelain manufacture
Zsolnay is a porcelain manufactory in Pécs with more than 160 years of history. The factory consists of large buildings with well-preserved machines where ceramics are made using traditional methods and undergo multiple firings until they develop their characteristic shiny, metallic surface.
The factory was founded in 1852 as a renamed ceramic workshop and developed into an internationally recognized enterprise under Vilmos Zsolnay, who took it over in 1865. The invention of the eosin glaze around 1880 created the characteristic shiny, metallic surfaces that made the company world-famous.
The factory is deeply woven into Pécs' identity, and its ceramics shape the city's appearance to this day. The bright tiles and decorations visible on many buildings remind visitors of a craft tradition that has touched the lives of generations.
Visitors can observe the production process through large glass walls from outside without interrupting the work. Guided tours and workshops allow visitors to get closer to traditional techniques and even decorate ceramic pieces themselves.
The eosin glaze was created through a Middle Eastern firing technique where air supply is deliberately reduced during the kiln process. This complex method produces the shimmering, metallic colors that make Zsolnay ceramics distinctive and secured their success at international exhibitions.
