Batthyány Square is a town square on the Buda side of the Danube in Budapest, Hungary, directly across from the Hungarian Parliament Building. It is lined with a baroque church, a market hall, and a pedestrian street that leads toward the Chain Bridge.
The square took its current name from Lajos Batthyány, Hungary's first prime minister, and a statue honoring him was placed there in 2008. Earlier, the land was raised during urban works, which is why several building entrances sit below today's street level.
The market hall just off the square draws local shoppers and visitors looking for fresh produce, bread, and small Hungarian specialties. On busy mornings, the mixing of sellers' calls and the clatter of crates gives a direct sense of everyday Buda life.
The square is easy to reach on foot from public transport, with a metro station right next to it and a suburban train line close by. Walking surfaces are mostly flat and open, so moving around the square and nearby market is straightforward.
The Hikisch House at number 3 has small reliefs showing the four seasons, an easy detail to miss while walking. These modest carvings add a touch of old craftsmanship that contrasts with the plain facades around the square.
