Church of Saint Anne, Baroque Catholic church in Víziváros district, Budapest, Hungary
This Baroque church in Víziváros features an elongated octagonal nave topped by an oval cupola and a two-tower facade. The structure sits near Batthyány Square and combines geometric elegance with monumental presence.
Construction began in 1740 under architect Cristoph Hamon on Ottoman-era foundations. The work continued until 1762 under Mathäus Nepauer, completing the structure on these historical bases.
The main altar showcases religious figures including Saint Anne, Joachim, Mary, Elizabeth, and King David set within ornate Baroque details. These carved representations tell stories of family and faith through their careful placement.
The church is easily accessible on Batthyány Street in the city center. The best time to explore the interiors is outside of service hours, when the architectural details can be appreciated without interruption.
At the entrance gate stand three allegorical statues representing Faith, Hope, and Love that were reconstructed after World War II damage. These figures mark the passage from the outside world into the sanctuary and give the gateway special symbolic meaning.
