Contra-Aquincum, Roman military fortress in District V, Hungary.
The fortress ruins of Contra Aquincum stand beneath protective plexiglass on the Pest side of Elizabeth Bridge near Március 15 Square.
Romans constructed this defensive structure in the early second century AD to protect river crossings and monitor activities along the Danube trading routes.
The fortress remains reveal Roman engineering methods through multiple brick layers and repurposed tombstone materials integrated during Diocletian's reinforcement period.
Visitors can examine the preserved foundations of the ancient fortress through a glass covering at street level near Elizabeth Bridge.
The site contains archaeological evidence of military activities, including weapons and tools used by Roman soldiers stationed at this strategic Danube crossing point.
