Contra-Aquincum, Roman military fortress in District V, Hungary.

Contra-Aquincum is a Roman military fortress whose ruins lie beneath protective glass near Elizabeth Bridge on the Pest bank. The foundations display multiple layers of bricks and other building materials that were used over centuries.

Roman soldiers built this fortress in the early 2nd century to protect river crossings and monitor trade along the Danube. It was later reinforced and played an important role in defending against attacks from the north.

The fortification shows how Romans lived along the Danube and the building techniques they used. You can see how they incorporated bricks and repurposed tombstones into the walls.

The ruins are located right at street level near Elizabeth Bridge and are easy to reach. Viewing is free and possible at any time since the site is openly accessible.

The site contains remains of weapons, tools, and personal items that Roman soldiers lost nearly 2000 years ago. These finds give direct insight into the daily life of the garrison at this strategic location.
