Zsolnay fountain, Decorative water well at Zsolnay Square, Pécs, Hungary.
The Zsolnay Fountain is a decorative water feature on Zsolnay Square made from eosin-glazed ceramics that shimmer in metallic colors. Its structure includes multiple animal-head spouts from which water flows.
Miklós Zsolnay donated this fountain to the city in 1913, fulfilling a promise his father Vilmos had made. The Zsolnay company had already become a leading ceramic manufacturer by the late 1800s.
The fountain displays traditional Hungarian design and shows the ceramic techniques that made Zsolnay famous across Europe. You can see the craftsmanship in every detail of the animal-head spouts when you walk around it.
The fountain sits in central Pécs and is easy to reach on foot. Water flows from the animal-head spouts, so you can view it from all sides as you walk around.
The eosin glaze creates an iridescent surface that shifts in color as light changes throughout the day. This optical effect means the fountain looks different depending on when you visit and how the sun hits it.
