Mecsek Mining Exhibitions, Museum in Pécs , Hungary
The Mecsek Mining Exhibitions is a museum dedicated to the history of mining in the region around Pécs. It features three main exhibitions including an underground tunnel section about 30 feet (10 meters) below street level, historical documents and photographs, and mineral collections alongside original mining machinery.
The museum was founded in 1977 to preserve the mining heritage of the Mecsek region. Mining for copper, coal, and later uranium shaped the local economy and settlements for many centuries.
The name comes from the Mecsek Mountains, which have defined the region for generations. The exhibits show how mining shaped local identity and how communities were built around this industry.
The underground tunnels stay cool year-round and require only normal walking ability to explore safely. Tours are available and help visitors understand the exhibits better, while the site remains accessible for most people.
The museum includes a section on uranium mining that shaped the village of Kovágószolos, which was built on waste heaps from extraction operations. This settlement offers a rare glimpse into how entire communities emerged from mining byproducts.
