Pécs Cathedral, Romanesque Revival cathedral in Pécs, Hungary
Pécs Cathedral is a Romanesque Revival church building with four towers and a large central nave flanked by side aisles and numerous chapels. The structure combines classical cruciform design with Gothic elements in its choir and decorative details.
The current building was completed in the second half of the 19th century using the architectural style of its era. Earlier Christian worship on this site dates back to the 4th century when a late Roman church stood here.
The interior holds several chapels and altars dedicated to different saints, each displaying religious artworks and stained glass that reveal local devotional traditions. These spaces show how the community has expressed its faith over time through visual decoration.
Visitors should dress appropriately and be mindful of ongoing services, as this remains an active place of worship. Visiting outside service times provides better access to the entire interior and allows for unhurried exploration.
During Ottoman rule between the 16th and 17th centuries, the building was repurposed and used for different functions, altering it substantially. Its later restoration as a cathedral required significant modifications to recover its intended form.
