Mosque of Pasha Qasim, Ottoman mosque in Széchenyi Square, Pécs, Hungary
The Mosque of Pasha Qasim is an Ottoman-style building located on Széchenyi Square that displays characteristic Islamic architectural elements including pointed arches and stone decorations. The compact structure preserves details from its original construction period and has been maintained as an important historical monument.
The building was constructed during the Ottoman occupation in the 16th century under Pasha Qasim's rule and originally functioned as a mosque. It was later converted into a Catholic church after the Turkish forces withdrew from the region.
The building shows how two different faiths left their mark on the same space, with Islamic prayer niches and Christian religious symbols standing side by side. Walking through, you notice how both traditions coexist within these walls.
The site is open during regular daytime hours and visitors can explore it freely. Wearing respectful clothing and moving quietly through the space helps you appreciate both the historical and religious importance of the building.
The structure still preserves the base of an original Ottoman minaret even though it now serves as a Catholic church. This architectural feature is one of the rare remnants of its kind left standing in the region.
