Ipoly, River tributary in Banská Bystrica Region, Slovakia.
The Ipoly is a river that flows roughly 230 kilometers through Slovakia and Hungary, originating in the foothills of the Slovak Ore Mountains. It eventually reaches the Danube and forms an important waterway in the region.
The river underwent major reshaping in the past through straightening and dam construction, which shortened its course and altered its natural form. These changes continue to shape how the waterway functions today.
Communities along the Ipoly River maintain traditional meadow management practices, supporting the grazing of Hungarian grey cattle in surrounding grasslands.
An unregulated section of around 30 kilometers between certain points keeps its more natural character, with much of it covered by a protected area. Visitors should keep in mind that the river has highly variable water levels and offers different conditions at different times of year.
The river exhibits extreme swings in water discharge rates, ranging from very low to quite high depending on conditions. This unpredictability makes it one of the more temperamental waterway systems in the area.
