Abaliget Cave

Abaliget Cave, Karst cave in Mecsek Mountains, Hungary

Abaliget Cave is a karst cave in the Mecsek Mountains with three branches extending 1,764 meters through limestone formations. The passages contain water channels, stalactites, and stalagmites that formed during the Triassic period.

The cave was first documented in 1768 and designated as a Natural Monument in 1941. Regular public access began during the 1980s.

The cave houses a research station and museum dedicated to 41 bat species, including the Lesser Horseshoe Bat and Greater Horseshoe Bat. These animals have adapted to the underground environment and use the cave as a natural shelter.

Visitors can explore 500 meters of developed passages on guided tours available daily from March to October. Winter hours are reduced during the colder months.

The cave has a specific microclimate and mineral content that provide therapeutic benefits for people with respiratory conditions. Visitors often notice improved well-being when breathing the humid, mineral-rich air inside.
