Lake Pécs, body of water
Lake Pécs is a reservoir located near Pécs on the northern edge of the Mecsek mountains, covering roughly 69 hectares and surrounded by forested hills. The water varies in depth, with some areas reaching over 7 meters, and features rocky bottoms in certain sections and softer, muddy areas in shallower zones.
The lake was built in the 1960s by damming a nearby stream and officially opened in 1966 to manage flood control and support water supply for the region. It was the second reservoir created as part of a plan to use the natural springs and develop a system of lakes near Orfű.
The lake serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors enjoy leisure activities together in a relaxed setting. The calm shores and nearby villages create a space where the slow rhythm of rural life is evident and people spend time in simple, friendly ways.
The lake is easily accessible from Pécs by bus to nearby Orfű with parking areas available along the shore for visitors. Facilities include snack areas, toilets, and showers, and during the bathing season lifeguards watch over swimmers at the sandy beaches.
The lake is home to diverse fish species including carp, catfish, and pike that attract anglers, with record catches of carp weighing over 30 kilograms having been recorded here. Fishing enthusiasts are particularly drawn to it in spring when rising water temperatures make fish more active.
