Mánfai Cave, Protected cave in Mánfa, Hungary
The Mánfai Cave stretches 360 meters in length with three entrances, featuring limestone formations and underground water streams within the Mecsek hills.
First documented in 1844 by Miksa Hölbling, the cave later served as a water reservoir supplying the nearby town of Komló with fresh water.
Researchers have extensively studied the cave since 1922, documenting its geological structure and discovering numerous endemic species within its chambers.
Access to the cave requires special permission and is restricted during winter months to protect the bat population that inhabits the underground system.
The cave houses 159 different animal species, including 19 types of bats, with five species found exclusively within this location.
