Mánfai Cave

Mánfai Cave, Protected cave in Mánfa, Hungary

Mánfai Cave is a karst cave in the Mecsek hills with three separate entrances and a length of approximately 360 meters. Limestone formations and underground streams run through its chambers, creating a complex underground network.

The cave was first documented in 1844 by Miksa Hölbling and later served as a water reservoir for the nearby town of Komló. It has been studied by researchers since 1922, when systematic investigation of the underground system began.

Researchers have extensively studied the cave since 1922, documenting its geological structure and discovering numerous endemic species within its chambers.

Access to the cave is restricted and typically requires special permission. Winter months are particularly protected to avoid disturbing the bat population that inhabits the underground system.

The cave system houses approximately 159 different animal species, including 19 bat species, five of which are found nowhere else in the world. These endemic creatures make the location exceptionally valuable to scientists studying isolated underground ecosystems.
