Lake Barátúr, stuwmeer in Magyarhertelend, Hongarije
Lake Barátúr is a reservoir built in Magyarhertelend and Magyarszék to protect the region from flooding. The water body covers about 28 hectares and holds over 400,000 cubic meters of water, fed by the Baranya Canal during heavy rains and releasing water gradually to prevent flood damage downstream.
The lake was completed in 2019 with European Union funding to reduce springtime flooding in the region. Its construction aimed to protect nearby villages and towns that had previously experienced regular flood damage from excessive rainfall.
The area is accessible via simple walking paths that offer views of the landscape and water. The water level changes seasonally and during maintenance, so the appearance of the lake varies throughout the year.
The lake was named through a public contest in 2018, taking its name from the nearby area of Barátúr, which means Friend's Place in the local language. This naming connects the modern structure to the region's historical roots.
