Castrum Altinum, Roman military fortification in Kölked, Hungary
Castrum Altinum is a Roman military fortification in Kölked whose foundations and wall remnants show the typical layout of a frontier fort. Excavations have revealed residential areas, storage buildings, and defensive structures that form a logical arrangement within the site.
The fort was built in the 1st century as part of Roman border defense along the Danube. It remained in use until the 5th century, when the region eventually fell under non-Roman control.
The name Castrum Altinum comes from Roman soldiers who called this place their high fortress. You can still see traces of their presence in the preserved stone walls today.
The excavation site is usually open to visitors and has information panels at various locations. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes and expect slippery ground after rain.
The fort was originally roofed with locally made clay tiles, fragments of which can still be found at the site. These discoveries show that Romans practiced crafts on location and did not rely solely on imported goods.
