Grand Hotel Aranybika, hotel
The Grand Hotel Aranybika is an Art Nouveau building in central Debrecen, located on Kossuth Square at the corner of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky and Piac streets. It contains 205 rooms across different sections, including 131 rooms in the original wing, 48 in a newer addition, plus studios and luxury suites, along with restaurants, cafés, and a spa.
The building began in 1699 as a small inn with four rooms on land purchased by the city from András Bika. The current structure was built in 1915 from designs by Alfréd Hajós, replacing earlier versions that had been renovated in 1799 and rebuilt in 1882.
The name Aranybika comes from András Bika, a landowner whose family lived in Debrecen since the 1500s. The hotel has always served as a meeting place for artists, politicians, and intellectuals who shaped the city's cultural life.
The hotel sits centrally on Kossuth Square, making it easy to walk to major sights like the Reformed Great Church and main shopping streets in Debrecen. It offers good accessibility as an established central location with on-site restaurants, cafés, and a spa for visitor convenience.
A distinctive sign featuring a bull decorates the hotel's facade, a symbol long connected to this building. This detail has become a recognizable landmark that both visitors and locals know, preserving the link to the original meaning of its name.
