Debrecen "Big Forest" Nature Conservation Area, Nature conservation area in Debrecen, Hungary
The Debrecen "Big Forest" Nature Conservation Area is a protected woodland on the edge of Debrecen, a city in eastern Hungary, and it forms part of the European Natura 2000 network. The area is made up mostly of oak trees and crossed by a network of marked walking trails, with benches and picnic spots placed along the way.
The forest was one of the first areas in Hungary to receive formal nature protection, a status granted in the early 20th century. Its later inclusion in the Natura 2000 network added a layer of European-level legal protection to the site.
A wooden open-air theatre sits inside the forest and hosts concerts and performances during the warmer months, with tall trees forming a natural backdrop for the stage. Locals treat the surrounding woodland as a place for weekend walks and family outings rather than a remote nature reserve.
The forest has several entry points around its perimeter, and parking is available near the main access spots. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since the trails can be muddy after rain, especially in spring and autumn.
A narrow-gauge railway runs through the forest, giving visitors a way to travel across different sections of the woodland by train rather than on foot. The route passes through parts of the trees that are harder to reach from the walking trails alone.
