Fire Tower, Medieval watchtower in Sopron, Hungary

The Fire Tower rises 60 meters above Sopron's main square, featuring a Gothic base section and a Baroque circular balcony with an ornate spire.

Built in the 13th century on Roman foundations, the tower underwent reconstruction after a fire in 1676, leading to the addition of its current Baroque elements.

The tower gate displays sculptures by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl commemorating the 1921 referendum when Sopron's citizens chose to remain part of Hungary.

Visitors can climb 200 steps to reach the observation platform, which opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 with an entrance fee of 2,500 HUF.

The bell at the top of the tower served a dual purpose, warning citizens about fires while also marking the hours of the day for the medieval town.
