Kiskunság National Park, National park in Kecskemét District, Hungary.
Kiskunság National Park is a biosphere reserve in Kecskemét District that spans multiple disconnected sections with sandy areas, wetlands, and open grasslands. Its units lie scattered south and west of Kecskemét, combining salt meadows, temporary lakes, and areas dotted with juniper and low shrubs.
The park was founded in 1975 as Hungary's second protected national area to safeguard remnants of traditional pastoralism and natural landscapes. Archaeological traces point to human herding communities using these dry plains since the Late Copper Age.
Traditional horseback demonstrations at the Bugac grounds showcase local herding techniques with grey longhorn cattle and open-range grazing methods. Shepherds wear light blue linen garments and use long whips during these practical displays on select days.
The House of Nature in Kecskemét offers maps, trail information, and guidance on guided tours through the different park units. Trails are generally flat and walkable for most visitors, though summer heat requires sun protection and sufficient water.
The shifting sand dunes near Fülöpháza move with strong winds, reshaping the surface constantly within the protected territory. These active dunes are among the few inland sand formations in Central Europe that remain in motion.
