Rudabánya, Mining district in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Hungary.
Rudabánya extends across 16.46 square kilometers in the North Hungarian region, between the Aggtelek Karst and Rudabánya Mountains.
King Louis the Great granted Rudabánya town status in 1351, establishing it as part of the Upper Hungarian Mining Towns alliance.
The discovery of the Rudapithecus Hungaricus skull from 10 million years ago transformed this mining town into a significant paleontological site.
The town maintains comprehensive infrastructure for its 2,721 residents, including commercial establishments and administrative services in the Kazincbarcika district.
Geological surveys indicate that approximately 35 million tons of iron ore remain underground, despite the mine's closure in 1986.
