Simontornya Castle, 13th-century Renaissance castle in Simontornya, Hungary
Simontornya Castle is a medieval fortress in the Hungarian town of Simontornya, built on a rise above the floodplain of the Sio River. The structure is made mainly of brick and has an irregular floor plan organized around a central inner tower.
The main structure was commissioned in 1277 by a member of the Dorrocske family named Simon. During the 16th century, the site went through major Renaissance changes that significantly altered its appearance.
The castle occasionally hosts events where visitors can watch demonstrations of medieval combat techniques. The inner courtyard, framed by the central tower, gives a clear sense of how daily life inside a medieval fortress was organized.
The elevated position of the castle offers wide views over the surrounding landscape, especially on clear days. Since the site covers several levels, comfortable shoes are a good idea before you start exploring.
In 2020, a local resident found over 1,600 coins from the Ottoman period while digging in a yard close to the castle. The find shows how deeply the Ottoman presence shaped everyday life in this part of Hungary.
