Castle of Salgó, Perőcsény

Castle of Salgó, Perőcsény, Medieval castle ruins in Börzsöny Mountains, Hungary.

Castle of Salgó sits on a 715-meter peak in the Börzsöny Mountains and offers broad views across the surrounding ridge landscape. Remaining stone walls show where defensive structures once stood in a strategically important location.

The fortress was founded in the 13th century by the Hontpázmány family, likely in response to the Tartar invasion. It was destroyed in 1424 on King Sigismund's order after its owner faced serious legal troubles.

The fortress served as a power center for the Hontpázmány family and shaped local authority across generations. Today the scattered stone remains tell of how such strongholds once controlled the lives of surrounding villages.

You reach the ruins by following marked hiking trails that wind through the mountains and allow time to explore the site. Wear sturdy shoes since the path becomes steep and loose stones are common.

The owner was convicted of counterfeiting coins, a crime that led to the destruction of the entire fortress. This unusual fate shows how power and punishment were tightly linked in medieval society.
