Márianosztra Strict and Medium Regime Prison

The Márianosztra facility combines prison operations with religious structures within a single complex designed to serve both functions. It contains separate areas for strict and medium security inmates, along with an active basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Hungary.

The Sisters of Charity founded the facility in 1858 by transforming a former monastery of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit into a prison. This conversion linked the site's religious heritage with its modern role in the penal system.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Hungary serves as a spiritual center where prisoners and visitors find moments of reflection within the complex. It shows how religious spaces continue to hold meaning even within institutional settings.
