Tropicarium, Herpetarium in Budapest District XXII, Hungary.
The Tropicarium is a herpetarium and marine aquarium located inside the Campona shopping center in Budapest's District XXII, housing snakes, reptiles, sharks, and tropical fish in purpose-built tanks and enclosures. Its best-known feature is a roughly 11-meter glass tunnel that runs beneath the main aquarium tank, giving visitors a view of sea animals from below.
The Tropicarium opened in the late 1990s as part of the development of the Campona shopping center and was one of the first facilities of its kind in Hungary. It was built at a time when combined animal and education attractions of this type were still rare in Central Europe.
The Tropicarium sits inside a shopping center, which gives it an unusual place in daily life: people often stop in between errands or a shopping trip. Families with children make up most of the visitors, and the proximity of the animals to the glass makes every visit feel direct and close.
The Tropicarium is on the ground floor of the Campona shopping center and is easy to find from the main entrances. A visit usually takes at least an hour or two if you want to see all the enclosures and spend time in the tunnel.
A shallow pool in the facility lets visitors touch rays with their hands while staff members watch over the interaction. These animals move calmly under a visitor's fingers, and many people are surprised by how soft and gentle they feel.
