Nagytétény Castle, Baroque castle in southern Buda, Hungary
Nagytétény Castle is a baroque mansion in southern Buda housing over 300 pieces of European furniture displayed across two floors in more than 20 rooms. The collection also includes functioning clocks and pocket watches from the 17th through 19th centuries that are maintained in working order.
The building was constructed between 1743 and 1751 by Baron József Rudnyánszky, incorporating elements from an earlier Gothic structure dating to the 13th century. This renovation transformed the medieval foundations into a grand baroque noble residence.
The castle now displays European furniture styles from medieval times through the 1800s, showing how people furnished their homes across different periods. Walking through the rooms gives you a sense of how tastes and daily living changed over the centuries.
Visiting requires moderate physical activity as the collection spans two floors with stairs between levels. Allow enough time to walk through the various rooms at your own pace and observe the details of each piece.
During winter, artists create specialized Christmas ornaments designed to match the style and period of each room in the castle. This seasonal display cleverly demonstrates how holiday traditions would have been celebrated within these historical spaces.
