Dunsink Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Dublin, Ireland
The observatory stands 84 meters above sea level on the south slope of a hill, located 8 kilometers northwest of central Dublin.
Francis Andrews, Provost of Trinity College Dublin, established the observatory in 1785 with an endowment of 3,000 pounds for astronomical research.
Between 1880 and World War I, the observatory determined Dublin Mean Time, which served as the official time standard for Ireland.
The South Telescope, featuring an 11.75-inch achromatic lens, remains a primary instrument for astronomical observations and public viewing sessions.
William Rowan Hamilton made mathematical discoveries at the observatory, including the development of quaternions while serving as Royal Astronomer of Ireland.
